Natural Deodorant Recipe

Updated: Sep 9, 2022

This is a simple DIY natural deodorant that smells fresh, and it works too!! It is made with clean, all-natural ingredients and ready in 15 minutes. Quickly will become a staple in your beauty routine.

I am a firm believer that what we apply to our skin is equally important to what we ingest to nourish our body. Now, before you stop reading and think that I’ve totally lost my mind, hear me out. To be clear, I am not sitting at home braiding my armpit hair and praying to my crystals. Not yet anyway! I am a 21st century modern woman and think that obsessing over the cleanliness of our food and body / home products is about as healthy as taking a bath in a sugar-paraben cocktail. But I am someone who believes in natural beauty and therefore I urge you to keep an open mind to alternative, natural products.

It is important that we remain conscious and read the labels of the products we purchase. We must make choices that remain reasonable and work for us. Like most of us today, I have some extra time and a small budget so making my own homemade deodorant is realistic and fun. Every small change matter when it comes to maintain my health! I sweat like any normal person, more so in summer, but I don’t want to use aluminium lashed deodorant no matter how effective it is! My journey with natural beauty products started long time ago and I eliminated most of chemical toxic substances from my daily care routine. My skin thanks me every day!!

That being said, one of the easiest DIY products to make for your body is definitely this homemade deodorant so why not give it a try! It is not only very simple to make but it lasts forever, and it totally and completely works. You won’t smell and it is surprisingly good antiperspirant too. So, let’s make the world a little less smelly and chemical – free too! You can use any essential oils you like; I choose my two favourite, but any combination of essential oils should be fine.

The ingredients:

Unrefined coconut oil 2 ½ tablespoons

Unrefined shea butter or cocoa butter 2 ½ tablespoons

Arrowroot powder or cornflour / corn

starch ¼ cup

Baking soda 1 ½ tablespoons

Grapefruit essential oil 6 drops

Lemon essential oil 6 drops

Tea tree essential oil (optional*) 1 drop

Preparation:

1. Place the coconut oil and shea butter in a glass bowl or heat resistant jar and place inside a medium saucepan.

2. Add water to the saucepan (enough to surround bowl/jar but not to overflow it) and bring to a gentle simmer.

3. As the water in the saucepan is heating up, ensure to stir gently the coconut oil and shea butter and continue to do so until it melts.

4. Once the oil and butter are melted add in arrowroot/cornflour powder, baking soda and essential oil.

5. Place in a 3 ounce / 85 grams jar and allow to cool at room temperature or in the fridge until it is reached a solid state.

6. Cover with a lid until use.

Direction for use: Spoon out a pea-sized amount with a wooden scoop or with fingers and rub between fingers before applying directly to underarms. For a regular day, one application in the morning after shower should be enough. For hotter days, workout or if you’re particularly sweaty, feel free to reapply as often as needed.

*Some people are sensitive to tea tree oil so be sure to perform a test with a drop on your skin before adding to the mixture. It is not necessary to include the tea tree oil drop but it is antibacterial, and it is the bacteria leaving on your underarms skin that leads to smell so 1 drop of tea tree oil should be a nice addition if you are not sensitive to it.
